IoT in a Day

IoT refers to the ecosystem of physical objects connected and capable of generating and exchanging data. It is one of the disruptive technologies that is about to change in depth our uses, as well as our global understanding of the network architecture. Foresight firms are already predicting that connected objects will be more than 21 billion by 2020, with an estimated growth rate of 25%: such a backlash requires upstream software, infrastructure and services that can coach and support such a deployment.

It must be considered that this technology engages IT stakeholders, but also business decision makers and architects who will be able to imagine the application and functional base. It is in this context that VISEO gathered last Friday, under the leadership of Microsoft Corp., a few selected customers to participate in a day of initiation to the control of an IoT device.

A real IoT device

So this is a new exercise and a world first: MS Corp, which manufactures the product, made the trip from the United States to supervise the exercise, which consisted in setting up a device by soliciting all the end-to-end IoT bricks: from sensor architecture to reporting, including calibration of a time database (such as TimeSeries Database or Time Series Insight) that can store data in "Near-Real-Time". Thanks to IoT Central, the exercise was able to do without too much technical considerations, by proposing a flexible and efficient support to facilitate the programming of the device.

In this context, the Azure platform developed by Microsoft is ideal for supporting any type of IoT project: with a basic Azure subscription any user can benefit from an IoT environment. Microsoft is indeed the first "global" publisher to offer SaaS services in IoT, but also IaaS and PaaS, and the expertise of VISEO allows precisely to address this technology to specific and demanding customer issues.

LPG's convincing experience

LPG Systems is therefore invited to the workshop, in the person of Rémi Peltier, IoT Project Manager, to share its feedback: LPG Systems is one of the world leaders in cellular stimulation: the French company develops machines dedicated to the well-being within the framework of kinesitherapic care, and appealed to VISEO to supervise the passage of its products with connectivity: indeed, as such machines are requiring a continuous maintenance and are claiming to answer to intensive safety standards , their connectivity quickly proved to be more than necessary: ​​indispensable. The expertise of a company such as VISEO makes it possible to interface between a business project and the technology that will be able to accommodate it: today the LPG fleet is rich with nearly 60,000 machines at a rate of connection of 80 per cent - where the objective was much lower - and meeting ever more numerous safety standards: a real success. The work of VISEO was precisely to design a strategic model, according to an agile methodology, to ensure the smooth running of the process governing the development of these connected machines: VISEO uses a proven framework of questions and answers that forces to interrogate its model in all aspects of IoT, from the most obvious to the most sophisticated questions, from ideation to deployment.

In particular, it is necessary to deal with the jurisdictional issues related to the GDPR, which involve working on 3 axes:

-  A legal phase with the CNIL

-  An awareness-raising phase for all concerned at the client's premises

-  A "tooling" phase: creation of a tool to support the GPRD change before the implementation and throughout the life of the project

Consider globally an IoT project

Emphasis was placed on the importance of not considering an IoT project as a technical project only: it is the mistake of many companies that are falling into the trend, as it was the case for the cloud two years ago, by failing to take into consideration the "ideological" and structural contingencies implied by IoT. The project must be accompanied upstream by solid expertise in ideation and strategic projection, and downstream of constant monitoring and support dedicated to all aspects, whether legal, technological or purely " architectural ".

The most conclusive result of this workshop was undoubtedly that functional managers without technical knowledge have passed the IoT practical exercises from start to finish: the promise of SaaS is therefore fulfilled.
